Decisions made as early as 7th grade can affect a student's high school GPA, rank, and eligibility for advanced opportunities in high school and beyond. For this reason, we encourage students to schedule a yearly check-up at around the time they are registering for the next year's courses. In addition to choosing courses, we discuss extracurricular and service activities as well as summer options. In grades 10 through 12 meetings typically become more frequent to encompass the elements of college planning.

Beginning in grade 10, we help families begin to identify colleges that would be a good fit for their teenager and compose a timeline for standardized testing (if students choose to take and submit test scores). We continue to work to find ways for students to develop their interests and talents through extracurricular and service activities and are available to assist in the college application process. Finally, we educate families about the financial aid process to help them find colleges that fit the family's budget.

Dr. Fithian has worked with public and private schools to develop a college planning program, create or upgrade a School Profile, and establish student/parent contracts to promote academic integrity. She has also implemented programs to foster student success, e.g. a summer software program at a regional magnet school to help incoming students identify and redress individual deficits in math mastery.
