Dr. Fithian has been working with local corporations to recruit high-level personnel to the Virginia Peninsula since December of 2004.
Even in today's economy, if you're trying to lure a top-notch, highly-educated professional to your company, chances are you have competition. Your recruit is very likely to be considering a number of attractive options, and the quality of educational and enrichment opportunities in each community will weigh heavily in his or her decision.
Many well-educated professionals in such circumstances will consult online school comparison sites. Such sites provide information on the percentage of students who have passed SOLs, who are eligible for free/reduced lunch, and who belong to particular ethnic groups. Such data paints a very limited picture of the educational landscape of a community, and in the case of the Virginia Peninsula it excludes the wealth of special programs that make our community such a wonderful place to raise a family.
My goal in meeting with your recruit is to provide a thorough, positive overview of the local educational landscape that is customized to address the individual interests or concerns of his/her family. I discuss:
* Gifted educational offerings at the local and state level
* District and regional magnet schools and specialized programs such as the International Baccalaureate Programs and the Governor's School for Science and Technolgy
* The diverse choices of high-quality, affordable colleges and universities in both the public and private sector
* Enrichment opportunities offered by local organizations in the arts, nature, science, and history, such as the Virginia Living Museum, Virginia Air and Space Center, and Colonial Williamsburg, and
* Outdoor recreational opportunities provided by local parks and recreation programs and many other resources available to the public.
The quality of schools and the availability of a rich assortment of other enrichment options for families matter a great deal to highly-educated professionals who are considering relocating. Indeed, many of the families I have met with over the past four years have told me that the information I provided played a significant, and at times decisive, role in their decision to move here.
Your business is only as good as the people who run it. To attract the best, show them you care about the well-being of their family and persuade them that the Virginia Peninsula is a great place to live by offering them an individualized educational consultation.
